What’s in a name?

Kylie Jenner, in the least surprising Kylie Jenner moment since the last time she did something incredibly unsurprising, has found a way for her brand to get in trouble again, this time by being accused of copying a piece of art done by Sara Pope, a British contemporary artist, who is suing the Jenner for copyright infringement and unfair competition.Below is the artists work compared to the work that Kylie is accused of copying.

Kylie, since the creation of her cosmetics line has been in the news countless times for poor branding, bad quality  products, and PR scandals. Fans have found their new limited edition colors were repackaged older lines of product, brushes broken upon arrival, and another artist settled a case out of court with Jenner over her use of the “drip lips” in her cosmetic branding.

Yet, time and time again, she sells out of her products. They are constantly flying off the shelves and recently Kylie became the richest member of the Jenner/Kardashian bunch In a recent  interview with Women’s Wear Daily, Kylie Jenner and her mother Kris Jenner, the companies CFO proved through documentation that  Kylie Cosmetics garnered $420 million in retail sales in 18 months. According to an article in Fortune, this could allow her to hit the billionaire milestone by 2022.

So with all this hoopla and scandal surrounding her brand, how is Kylie able to still rake in the cash and stay on top of every bodies “most wanted” list? Simple.

Kylie Jenner is part of an empire. An empire who’s name is synonymous with fame, fortune, and a massive gargantuan fan base. If Kylie were some no one from Idaho, you could put money on the fact that no one would buy her products. They are over priced for the product that is offered, the formulation is constantly changing and being redesigned, and the brand itself cannot stay out of other people’s work long enough to forget about the last time they were charged with stealing someone’s work.

Kylie and the Kardashian name (although she is a Jenner she is still famous under the Kardashian brand have been able to transcend what it means to have to work to get your product liked by customers. Kylie is able to promote her line just by being herself. Sure, she is a model now, but there are plenty of people who have criticized her for being a model only because she is from the famous brand, sorry, family.

Kylie is very aware of her fan base, and knows exactly what they want. She knows this, because Kylie can tell them what they want. She is an influencer, and her best bit of branding and advertising happens just from her using the products and selling them herself. She shows herself using a new product from her line on Instagram, and within minutes it is sold out and customers are breaking down the metaphorical door to get some.

You can say what you want about the Kardashian/ Jenner tribe, but the one thing they are not is stupid. The bunch knows exactly how to cater to their market and exactly what they want to offer in order to continue to rake in the cash. And when they hit a snag like copyright infringement or quality assurance issues, they take it in stride, and just keep on pumping out the products.

Will this neon lips fiasco be enough to take Kylie down or impede her progress? Highly doubtful. The girl knows how to make a buck, which is easy to do when all you have to do is sign your name on a product.
